This work is freely inspired by the Greek myth of the god Pan teaching the young man Daphnis to play the pipes, with Daphnis represented by the flute, and Pan by the bassoon. After an introductory theme, the music depicts their first encounter and the first lesson, after which various themes and motifs are developed between the two players as Daphnis quickly acquires skills to match those of his mentor.
