Rebuke, Recoding, and Realization: A Performance Guide to Xantippe’s Rebuke by Mary Jane Leach

Nine oboes- one performer. Xantippe’s Rebuke, written for live oboe and 8 pre-recorded oboe tracks, was composed by Mary Jane Leach in 1993. While the work does come with a sound file of the tracks, this piece creates the unique possibility to “play over yourself” by recording and layering the tracks on your own, adding a depth of expression and personality to the performance. This presentation will explore performance techniques and practices to layer the oboe parts, as well as insights to the historical background and inspiration of the work. The presentation will conclude with a performance of Xantippe’s Rebuke.
